But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. – 1 Timothy 6:6-8
We know as believers that we should be content with such things as we have. Normally for folks that means being content with what they 'don't' have. Or, being satisfied with what they've been given. Translation "settle for what I have". Isn't that saying "Settle for and not fuss about what the Lord has limited me to"?
I think it is wise to look at this verse in relation to life and see that we should 'Be content with what we have'. Be content with who is in our family, our job, our friends, our situations or past; as well as food and clothes. If we are internally pining away, inside 'discontent' with who our friends or realtives are, then we are not being content.
Those of us who are 'conservative', who are supposed to 'be the example of godliness'(?) I fear we are most guilty of all of not being content with such things as we have. There is nothing wrong with striving to 'gain more godliness', and there is surely no wrong in maintaining the 'standard', especially in this perverse generation...but are we really content with what we have? This verse may seem to only be speaking of food and clothes but I think we should be wise and have a 'spirit of contentment' in all things. I don't see that we can be content with food and clothes and always discontent with the folks and situations that the Lord has put around us.
May the Soverign Lord give us grace today to have great gain today by living godly and being content.
